Tom Dixon creates Delaktig modular bed and sofa for IKEA

IKEA and Tom Dixon have revealed the results of their collaboration: a unique and versatile modular bed. Set to launch during Milan design week, Delaktig is a bed and sofa that can be modified into different styles of furniture throughout its lifetime.

For many, the living room is now a place to eat, drink, relax and socialise, therefore, adaptable furniture is key. Tom Dixon has created a concept that I’m sure will revolutionise how we use furniture.

DELAKTIG, the Swedish word for ”involvement”, is the perfect name for this collaborative take on modern living. In the spirit of updating design conventions, DELAKTIG invites anyone to add to it, or modify it to give it a different look and feel. You can add armrests and a lamp for a homely touch. Add a table and a new backrest cover. Swap the armrests around. Change the backrests. Change the entire cover completely, why don’t you? The options are endless!

Personally, I think the DELAKTIG is the perfect solution for a small flat. It fives you everything you need; a sofa, guest bed, reading nook, chaise lounge etc. So, why not try it out?

Think of DELAKTIG as a blank canvas. Once you decide the size of your base, let your needs and dreams determine the rest. Also, it’s never static, so, you are free to alter your space as often as you like.

‘We are in the midst of a huge revolution in how people create, manufacture and consume. The furniture business has been slow to respond to the opportunities, but now is an amazing time to experiment in new ways of working. In this case in a fresh collaboration directly with the consumer, industry and global experts’ – Tom Dixon

The DELAKTIG frame has an industrial feel, while still fitting with IKEA’s Scandi aesthetic. That is one of the reasons why IKEA and Tom chose to work with aluminum. It’s great for the industrial process, and its raw aesthetics makes for a durable, lightweight frame.

Although Tom Dixon and IKEA have designed attachments for the DELAKTIG system, the Space10 innovation lab has teamed with open-source manufacturing platform Opendesk to create workspace attachments. Created by a team of seven designers, the attachments turn the sofa bed into work furniture, potentially extending its product cycle even further.
